When Jonas’ mother departs to “battle her demons,” the 12-year-old takes on the role of the family’s leader, becoming the de facto caretaker for his younger siblings. As their resources dwindle, the children escape into a self-created realm, where their home transforms into a surreal black-and-white landscape filled with insects and enchantment. They cultivate gardens in saucepans, adopt bugs as pets, and watch as spiderwebs spread. Jonas finds a glimmer of hope in the companionship of an eccentric young homeless man, which helps him navigate the challenges of an adult world.
