Fanny
“Fanny” is the middle installment of Marcel Pagnol’s “Marseille trilogy,” which includes “Marius, Fanny, and César.” In this chapter, Fanny finds herself in love with Marius, who subsequently leaves her. She soon learns she is expecting a child. Under pressure from her mother and Marius’s father, César, she is encouraged to consider the courtship of an older suitor. To maintain her reputation, Fanny agrees to wed Honoré Panisse, a wealthy businessman from the Vieux Port, who is three decades her senior and willing to acknowledge her child as his own.
