Codebreaker
Alan Turing, a brilliant British mathematician, played a crucial role in deciphering the German naval Enigma Code during World War II, an achievement that likely saved countless lives. Despite his significant contributions, Turing’s accomplishments were not acknowledged during his lifetime. Instead, he was criminalized for his homosexuality, which was illegal at the time. In 1952, he was found guilty of ‘gross indecency’ with another man and subjected to ‘organo-therapy,’ a form of chemical castration. Tragically, two years later, at the age of 41, Turing took his own life using cyanide. The very country he had helped protect drove him to profound despair and an untimely death.
